Are the piano and the harmonium similar instruments?
If you look at the keys of a piano and a harmonium, you will notice that the key pattern is similar.
And indeed, the harmonium got its keys by Western influence, so it is not an Indian invention as commonly believed.
But this still doesn't make it completely similar to the piano: the keys of a harmonium are smaller and the playing experience is different. This means that if you're able to play some piano, you won't necessarily be able to play the harmonium right away. A piano's weighted keys and its lack of bellows are just some examples of how different the playing style is.
If you already play the piano, being familiar with its keys can give you some advantage when switching to the harmonium. But adapting to the smaller keys of the harmonium and the different playing style can still prove to be a challenge.
That being said, learning the harmonium is actually easier than learning the piano, because you're only playing with one hand, without having to synchronize your left and right hand.
If you know how to play the harmonium you can easily play the keyboard (Casio) too!

DID YOU KNOW?
⭕ Chords are never used in Indian classical music. The word 'Harmonium' comes from 'harmony'. Harmony means multiple, different notes played together that sound 'in harmony': complementary to each other's tuning. So if we want to play in harmony, we do this by playing chords.
But exactly because chords are never used in Indian classical ragas, most Indian teachers struggle to play and teach the chords. The reason is simply that the Indian music system doesn't have any knowledge about it. Using the Indian 'Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa-Dha-Ni' scale to learn chords is therefore very confusing and not recommended at all.
The Harmonium Evolution course uses a golden combination of both the Western and the Indian music system. The Western system teaches you how to play chords and harmonies. The Indian system adds to that its beautiful and heartfelt melodies.

Chords are never used in Indian classical music.
The word 'Harmonium' comes from 'harmony'. Harmony means multiple, different notes played together that sound 'in harmony': complementary to each other's tuning. So if we want to play in harmony, we do this by playing chords.
